What 1A hair looks like
Type 1A is the straightest hair type - completely flat from root to tip with zero natural curve. Strands are very fine and silky, often described as 'pin-straight'. Because the natural oils from the scalp travel the full length of the strand easily, 1A hair is more prone to looking greasy quickly than any other type.
1A is the textbook straight type and the rarest of the Type 1 patterns in practice. The cuticle layers lie completely flat against the cortex, which is why the hair reflects light so smoothly and why sebum from the scalp travels the full strand length unobstructed. That same flatness is what makes 1A look oily fastest of any hair type. Strand-by-strand it is the finest in the Walker system, often visibly thinner than a piece of sewing thread, which is why volumising products and dry shampoo dominate the 1A care routine. The compensating advantage: 1A is the easiest type to style smooth, holds shine without effort, and never battles humidity-driven frizz. Famously fine straight hair appears in editorial coverage of East Asian hair structures and in commentary on classic supermodel hair from the 1990s and 2000s; it is the look mainstream beauty marketing centred for decades.

Pin-straight, very fine hair appears in editorial coverage of East Asian hair structures and in long-running discussion of classic supermodel hair styles. The look defined commercial beauty marketing for decades, partly because 1A is the easiest texture to photograph with consistent shine.
1A vs neighbouring types
1A and 1B are both straight, but the difference is body. 1A is pin-straight from root to tip with no bend even at the ends; the strand is very fine and silky. 1B is straight with a gentle bounce at the ends and a noticeably medium strand diameter. If your hair holds a blowout overnight, you are likely 1B. If a blowout falls within hours and your hair looks oily quickly, you are likely 1A. Many people think they are 1A but are actually 1B because pure 1A is genuinely uncommon.
Read the 1B full guide1A is the finest and silkiest straight type; 1C is the coarsest and most resistant. The diameter difference is dramatic: 1A strands are thinner than sewing thread, while 1C strands are thicker than thread. 1C also has a slight tendency to frizz in humidity, while 1A almost never frizzes. If you can wrap your hair around a chopstick and it stays bent, you are not 1A.

1A's care routine is the inverse of Type 4's: the goal is keeping the hair light and airy, not adding moisture. Wash every 1 to 2 days with a lightweight, sulphate-free volumising shampoo. Skip heavy creams, butters, and oils which sit on the strand and cause limp greasy look within hours. Condition mid-length to ends only, never at the root. Dry shampoo is a near-daily essential for the days between washes; the Living Proof and Verb formulas above are the go-to picks because they powder out cleanly rather than leaving white residue. For style, lean on lightweight sprays (sea salt, texture spray, mousse) rather than creams. Heat protect lightly before any heat styling; 1A is fragile and heat damage shows immediately. Avoid heavy LOC or LCO routines entirely; those are Type 3 and Type 4 protocols and will destroy 1A's natural body within one wash.
Cleansing
Shampoo every 2-3 days. Lightweight sulphate-free formulas avoid stripping.
Conditioning
Condition every wash. A weekly deep condition improves definition and reduces frizz.
Styling
Mousse or lightweight gel applied to damp hair encourages wave definition. Scrunch upward.
Night routine
Protect your hair at night with a satin or silk pillowcase or bonnet. Loose styles reduce friction and breakage while sleeping.
Common mistakes to avoid
Using heavy butters and oils designed for curly or coily hair; 1A goes flat and greasy within hours under that weight
Conditioning at the root; only condition mid-length to ends, otherwise the scalp area looks oily by lunchtime
Skipping dry shampoo; 1A produces visible oil at the roots faster than any other hair type
Frequent flat-iron use without lightweight heat protectant; 1A strands are the thinnest in the typing system and heat damage compounds quickly
Trying curl-cream products to add wave; 1A pattern does not hold cream-based curl product, and the weight just leaves the hair limp
