What 4C hair looks like
Type 4C is the tightest and most densely packed hair type in the Andre Walker system. Shrinkage is 75% or more - it is entirely normal for 4C hair to appear half or even a third of its stretched length when dry. The individual strands are often very fine, but so densely packed that the overall look is full. Defined curl pattern is minimal in its natural dry state; stretching, moisturising, and styling techniques are needed to reveal the underlying coil structure. 4C is the most underrepresented type in commercial hair product advertising and mainstream editorial - a bias this site addresses directly in our texturism coverage.
4C is the type with the highest shrinkage in the entire system - 75% or more, which means hair that stretches to shoulder length appears as a 3-4 inch Afro when dry. This shrinkage is one of the most misunderstood features of 4C: people unfamiliar with the type often assume the hair 'doesn't grow', when in reality it grows at the same rate as any other type. The apparent stagnation in length is actually about retention - keeping the hair from breaking off at the same rate it grows. 4C has been the most historically underrepresented type in mainstream hair care marketing. Most products were formulated for 3A-3C patterns, and 4C users spent years adapting routines designed for looser patterns before brands like SheaMoisture, Pattern Beauty, Bread Beauty Supply, and Curl Mix began creating products specifically formulated for the coily end of the spectrum. If you have 4C hair and feel that mainstream product recommendations have repeatedly failed you, that is not a reflection of your hair being 'difficult' - it is a reflection of an industry that historically under-invested in this texture. The knowledge base built by creators like Whitney White (Naptural85) is genuinely the most reliable resource for 4C care, and we credit it here directly.
Noted examples
Whitney White (Naptural85) is the most-cited 4C hair educator online and has documented her care journey for over a decade with meticulous detail. Lupita Nyong'o has spoken publicly about her 4C hair and been an advocate for representation. Viola Davis, Issa Rae, and many others have discussed Type 4 care in interviews. Bread Beauty Supply (Maeva Heim, founder) was created explicitly because Maeva couldn't find products that worked for her 4C hair.
4C vs neighbouring types
The 4B/4C boundary is the least clearly defined in the entire typing system. Both types have minimal visible pattern in their natural dry state and very high shrinkage. The primary differences: 4C shrinks more (75%+ versus 4B's 65-75%), and 4C has even less visible coil pattern when dry. Many people who believe they are 4C find their pattern more closely matches 4B when they look at individual strands under good lighting - or they are genuinely between the two. For care purposes, the routines are very similar and the products largely overlap.
Read the 4B full guideThe 4C care routine
4C hair care is built on three foundations: maximum moisture, minimum manipulation, and protective styling. Every aspect of the routine should be framed around these goals. Wash day: work in 4-6 sections (never washing 4C as one bulk of hair). Pre-poo with oil (coconut or olive) for 15-30 minutes before shampooing. Sulphate-free shampoo only. Rinse-out conditioner with significant slip for detangling. Leave-in applied to soaking wet hair in sections. LOC or LCO method (liquid, oil, cream or liquid, cream, oil - experiment to find which order your hair prefers). Seal with castor oil. Between wash days: refresh with water and leave-in, then reseal with oil. Protective styles (twists, braids, bantu knots, braid-outs, wigs, weaves) reduce daily manipulation and maximise length retention. Satin bonnet or satin pillowcase every night without exception. Deep condition every single wash day - this is the single highest-impact habit for 4C hair health.
Cleansing
Co-wash weekly; sulphate-free shampoo every 2-4 weeks; clarifying shampoo monthly to remove build-up.
Conditioning
Deep condition every wash day. Leave-in conditioner every time. Use the LOC or LCO method (Liquid, Oil, Cream) to layer moisture.
Styling
Stretch styles (twist-outs, braid-outs) help reveal the underlying pattern. Avoid manipulating dry hair. Apply products to soaking wet hair.
Night routine
Protect your hair at night with a satin or silk pillowcase or bonnet. Loose styles reduce friction and breakage while sleeping.
Common mistakes to avoid
Believing 4C hair doesn't grow - it grows at the same rate as any other type; the challenge is retention, not growth
Using products designed for looser textures - most mainstream products are too lightweight for 4C's moisture needs
Detangling dry or on slightly damp hair - always detangle with conditioner in, in sections, with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb only
Washing 4C as one mass instead of in sections - this creates impossible tangles during the wash process
Expecting visible curl definition in its natural dry state - 4C's pattern doesn't typically show defined coils when dry; this is not damage
Skipping deep conditioning between wash days or reducing its frequency - 4C needs deep conditioning every wash, weekly
Applying excessive heat - 4C is extremely heat-sensitive; restrict direct heat to very occasional use with high-quality protectant
