What 2C hair looks like
Type 2C blurs the line between wavy and curly. Thick S-waves begin at the root and may form loose ringlets at the ends. Frizz is significant. Shrinkage is noticeable - the hair appears considerably shorter when dry than when wet. Many 2C types find curly-hair methods work better for them than wavy-hair methods, because the strand diameter and moisture needs are closer to 3A.
2C blurs the line between wavy and curly more than any other type in the typing system. Strands are coarse, thick S-waves begin close to the root, and the ends often form loose ringlets that border on Type 3A. Frizz is significant and shrinkage is noticeable (10-20%, more than any other Type 2). Many 2C people spent years on wavy-girl routines that did not quite work and only found the right product mix when they shifted to curly-girl routines designed for the looser end of Type 3. The fundamental tension on 2C is whether to treat the hair as the strongest expression of Type 2 (Bumble and bumble, Ouai wavy-girl approach) or the loosest expression of Type 3 (DevaCurl, Ouidad curly-girl approach). The answer is often product-mix-by-area: lighter wavy-girl products at the crown, heavier curly-girl products where the ends form loose curls. 2C also has the highest mixed-texture incidence in Type 2; many 2C people have 2B at the crown and 3A at the nape.
Noted examples
2C appears in editorial coverage of mixed-heritage and Mediterranean hair textures; it is the type that sits awkwardly between mainstream straight-hair editorial and natural-hair community coverage, which is why dedicated 2C resources are thinner than for either 2B or 3A.
2C vs neighbouring types
2B and 2C differ on coarseness and definition strength. 2C waves are thicker per strand and often form loose ringlets at the ends rather than maintaining a flat S; 2B holds the S-wave pattern uniformly. 2C benefits from real curl-defining cream and hold-providing gel; 2B does well on lighter products. If your hair forms anything resembling a ringlet at the ends, you are likely 2C rather than 2B.
Read the 2B full guide2C and 3A are the most-confused boundary in the lower half of the typing system. 2C has S-waves that may form loose curls at the ends; 3A forms genuine ringlets or corkscrews from mid-length. The diameter test: 3A curls are roughly the diameter of a thick marker; 2C curl-tendency is flatter and looser than that. Shrinkage: 2C is 10-20%, 3A is 20-35%. If your hair shrinks more than a quarter of its stretched length when dry, you are 3A.

2C does best treated as the loosest curl type rather than the strongest wave type. Use sulphate-free curl-aware shampoo every 4 to 7 days, rich curl-aware conditioner mid-length to ends. After washing, apply a curl-defining cream and a medium-hold gel to soaking-wet hair, scrunch upward, then diffuse on low heat with the diffuser cupping the hair. Air-drying works but produces less definition than diffusing for 2C. Plopping (wrapping wet hair in a T-shirt on top of the head for 15 to 30 minutes after applying products) noticeably improves curl clumping. Deep-condition every wash. Avoid Type 1 volumising products entirely and Type 2A lightweight wave sprays as well; 2C needs real weight and real hold. The gel cast (the crispy feel after the gel dries) can be scrunched out gently to leave soft defined curls. Heat-style with protection as desired; 2C holds curling-iron curls particularly well because the pattern is already there.
Cleansing
Shampoo every 2-3 days. Lightweight sulphate-free formulas avoid stripping.
Conditioning
Condition every wash. A weekly deep condition improves definition and reduces frizz.
Styling
Mousse or lightweight gel applied to damp hair encourages wave definition. Scrunch upward.
Night routine
Protect your hair at night with a satin or silk pillowcase or bonnet. Loose styles reduce friction and breakage while sleeping.
Common mistakes to avoid
Using lightweight wave sprays designed for 2A; the 2C pattern needs real hold and the salt sprays leave the hair frizzy without definition
Towel-drying with a cotton towel; the friction disrupts curl clumping and produces the worst version of 2C frizz
Brushing dry; 2C waves break apart with brushing and need to be left alone or finger-detangled wet
Treating 2C as straight; mainstream straight-hair shampoo strips the moisture 2C's coarse strand needs and leaves the pattern undefined
Skipping the deep conditioning step; 2C's coarseness and humidity sensitivity demand weekly intensive moisture
