What 3A hair looks like
Type 3A has the loosest defined curls of the curly category. Each strand forms a spiral with a diameter roughly that of a large marker or thick piece of chalk. The curls have a clear S-shape with a springy bounce. Shrinkage runs 20-35%, meaning air-dry hair looks noticeably shorter than stretched or wet hair. The hair is thick enough to hold styles but light enough to lose definition in humidity without product.
The 3A curl springs back noticeably when stretched and released. When dry, it forms defined ringlets without product, though frizz can disrupt definition in high humidity. This is one of the most varied types in practice - 3A hair can look very different depending on density, porosity, and strand thickness. Someone with low-porosity 3A and someone with high-porosity 3A will use quite different products even though their curl pattern is the same. That's why the porosity test matters as much as knowing your type. The type tells you the shape; the porosity tells you how to hydrate it.
Noted examples
3A is commonly described in editorial for people with naturally curly Mediterranean, Latin American, and mixed-heritage backgrounds. Julia Roberts and Sarah Jessica Parker have both documented looser curl patterns in the 3A range in their styling interviews.
3A vs neighbouring types
2C and 3A are easily confused. The key difference is definition: 2C waves are flatter and more S-shaped, losing definition easily and frizzing in humidity. 3A forms a proper corkscrew or ringlet. If your pattern is barely visible when dry, you may be 2C. If you can see a spiral forming, you're likely 3A.
Read the 2C full guide3B curls are tighter and springier than 3A. A rough test: wrap a curl around a thick marker. If it fits loosely, you're probably 3A. If it fits snugly or barely fits, you're likely 3B. Shrinkage is also higher in 3B (30-45% versus 3A's 20-35%).

3A hair benefits from the core curly girl method principles: sulphate-free shampoo every 5-7 days, a weekly deep conditioning treatment, leave-in conditioner every wash day, and a light hold gel or cream applied to soaking wet hair. Avoid heavy butters and thick creams - 3A hair is prone to being weighed down, which causes curls to separate and look stringy rather than defined. The LOC method (Liquid, Oil, Cream) works well, but use a lightweight oil (argan, jojoba) rather than coconut oil, which can be too heavy. Diffuse on low heat or air-dry - high heat disrupts the curl pattern and risks permanent damage.
Cleansing
Sulphate-free shampoo every 5-7 days. Co-wash in between if hair feels dry.
Conditioning
Deep condition every 1-2 weeks. Leave-in every wash. Use the LOC method for moisture retention.
Styling
Apply leave-in, cream, and gel while hair is soaking wet. Scrunch to encourage curl clumping. Diffuse or air-dry.
Night routine
Protect your hair at night with a satin or silk pillowcase or bonnet. Loose styles reduce friction and breakage while sleeping.
Common mistakes to avoid
Using products designed for 4C hair (too heavy, will weigh curls flat and cause build-up)
Touching hair while it dries - this breaks curl clumps and causes frizz
Skipping deep conditioning - 3A curls become dry and brittle without weekly moisture treatment
Over-cleansing with sulphate shampoos - strips natural oils and leaves curls dry and undefined
Air-drying in cold temperatures - slows drying and encourages frizz rather than definition
