What 2A hair looks like
Type 2A is the gentlest of the wavy types. A loose, elongated S-wave forms from root to tip, usually flat against the head rather than voluminous. In high humidity the waves may straighten; in moisture-controlled conditions they form soft, beachy waves. This type sits in the grey zone between straight and properly wavy hair.
2A is the gentlest wavy type and sits at the soft end of the Type 2 spectrum. The pattern forms a loose elongated S-wave from root to tip, typically lying close to the head rather than building volume. In dry conditions the wave is defined enough to read as wavy; in high humidity it often straightens (because the cuticle is fine enough that humidity disrupts the bonds holding the pattern). Strands are fine to medium and the natural finish is the editorial beachy wave look: undone, soft, with a slight roughness rather than the polish of straight hair or the spring of curly hair. 2A is the type most often described as easy-going, but the practical reality is that it sits awkwardly between products: too wavy for straight-hair routines, too loose for curl-defining routines. The sweet spot is lightweight texture sprays and salt sprays that enhance the natural pattern without weighing it down.
Noted examples
2A is the prototypical beachy wave type and appears in editorial coverage of surfer and beach-town aesthetics. The look has been a perennial editorial favourite and underpins much of the air-dry product category.
2A vs neighbouring types
2A and 1C sit at the boundary of straight and wavy. The differentiator is wet pattern: 2A forms a loose S-wave when soaking wet; 1C remains visibly straight even wet. 1C is coarser per strand; 2A tends to be finer. If your hair air-dries with a slight wave but is straight when wet, you may be 1C with humidity texture rather than 2A.
Read the 1C full guide2A and 2B differ on wave definition and volume. 2A waves lie flat against the head and are loose, more S-curve than spiral; 2B waves have clear definition starting closer to the root and noticeable volume. 2B holds curl-defining cream better than 2A, which often goes limp under cream weight. If your waves curl noticeably at the ends rather than just bending, you are likely 2B.
Read the 2B full guideThe 2A care routine
2A's care routine prioritises pattern enhancement over moisture or hold. Sulphate-free shampoo every 2 to 3 days, lightweight conditioner mid-length to ends only. After washing, apply a sea salt spray or wave spray to damp hair, scrunch upward to encourage the natural wave to form, then air-dry or diffuse on low heat. The salt is doing the work; cream-based curl products generally fail on 2A because the fine strands cannot hold the weight. If the wave needs more definition, layer a light mousse before the salt spray. Avoid heavy oils, butters, and cream-based curl definers (those are 2C and Type 3 products). Heat-style as desired with a lightweight heat protectant; 2A holds curling-iron waves reasonably and flat-irons smooth easily. Where 1A's brief is keep it light, 2A's brief is enhance the pattern without weighing it down.
Cleansing
Shampoo every 2-3 days. Lightweight sulphate-free formulas avoid stripping.
Conditioning
Condition every wash. A weekly deep condition improves definition and reduces frizz.
Styling
Mousse or lightweight gel applied to damp hair encourages wave definition. Scrunch upward.
Night routine
Protect your hair at night with a satin or silk pillowcase or bonnet. Loose styles reduce friction and breakage while sleeping.
Common mistakes to avoid
Using curl creams designed for Type 3; the fine 2A strand cannot hold the weight, and the wave goes limp under the cream
Skipping the salt or wave spray; without one, 2A often air-dries flat and the natural pattern looks undefined
Towel-drying aggressively; the friction disrupts the wave clumping that produces the beachy look
Brushing dry; 2A waves break apart with brushing and need to be left alone once styled
Over-conditioning at the root; the wave loses lift and the hair looks limp by mid-day
