What 2B hair looks like
Type 2B has a clearly defined S-wave pattern with noticeable volume and bounce. Waves begin closer to the roots than 2A and are more resistant to straightening. Frizz is a more significant factor than in 2A. This type benefits from curl-defining techniques - scrunching, diffusing, and using products designed for wavy hair rather than straight or curly.
2B is the heart of the wavy category. The S-wave pattern is well-defined with noticeable volume and bounce, beginning closer to the roots than 2A's flatter pattern. Strands are medium-diameter and the wave holds its shape better than 2A in moderate humidity, though heavy humidity can still cause it to expand into frizz. 2B is the type that the wavy-girl method (curly-girl method adapted for wavy hair) was largely written for: scrunch, diffuse, soft-hold gels and curl creams, no harsh sulphates. The compensating consideration: 2B benefits from real curl-defining product, unlike 2A which goes limp under the same products. Mainstream haircare aimed at frizz control and wave definition is largely formulated for 2B. The two most common 2B mistakes are using products too heavy (Type 3 / 4 curl creams flatten 2B) or too light (Type 1 volumising products do not enhance the natural pattern).
Noted examples
2B is popular in natural-hair influencer coverage; the wavy-girl-method community has built large content libraries around this type specifically. The wave pattern is what mainstream salon services for naturally textured straight hair most often target.
2B vs neighbouring types
2A and 2B both form S-waves but 2A is looser, flatter, and finer; 2B is more defined, starts at the root, and has noticeable volume. 2B holds curl-defining cream that would flatten 2A. The visual test: if your wave looks like a flat zigzag, you are 2A; if it forms a clear S that bounces, you are 2B.
Read the 2A full guide2B and 2C differ on coarseness and definition strength. 2C waves are thicker per strand and form ringlets at the ends rather than maintaining the flat S; 2B holds the S-wave pattern uniformly. 2C often borders on Type 3A and many 2C types do better on curly-hair routines than wavy-girl methods; 2B sits comfortably in the wavy-girl approach.

2B follows the wavy-girl method effectively. Sulphate-free shampoo every 3 to 5 days, mid-weight conditioner mid-length to ends. To style, apply curl-defining cream and a soft-hold gel to soaking-wet hair, scrunch upward to encourage curl clumping, then diffuse on low heat with the diffuser cupping the hair, or air-dry undisturbed. Weekly deep-conditioning is non-negotiable for 2B because the cuticle is more lifted than in Type 1 and dries out faster. Avoid rough towel-drying; use a microfibre towel or T-shirt and scrunch gently. Plopping (wrapping wet hair in a T-shirt on top of the head for 10 to 20 minutes) is genuinely effective for 2B because the curl clumps form better under contained moisture. Heat-style with protection as desired; 2B holds curling-iron curls and flat-irons smooth easily.
Cleansing
Shampoo every 2-3 days. Lightweight sulphate-free formulas avoid stripping.
Conditioning
Condition every wash. A weekly deep condition improves definition and reduces frizz.
Styling
Mousse or lightweight gel applied to damp hair encourages wave definition. Scrunch upward.
Night routine
Protect your hair at night with a satin or silk pillowcase or bonnet. Loose styles reduce friction and breakage while sleeping.
Common mistakes to avoid
Using Type 3 or Type 4 curl products; the heavy creams flatten 2B's wave rather than defining it
Towel-drying with a regular cotton towel; the friction breaks the curl clumping and causes frizz
Brushing dry; 2B waves separate and frizz when brushed dry, leaving the hair looking expanded rather than defined
Skipping deep conditioning; 2B's cuticle is more lifted than Type 1 and dries out faster between washes
Touching the hair while it dries; the scrunching needs to happen at the soaking-wet stage, then leave it alone until completely dry
